Following the inhuman treatment meted out to the Supers Eagles of Nigeria by the Libyan authorities, Mr Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, president of the Libyan Football Federation, has tendered his resignation.

Abdelhakim resigned from his position during a regular meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly on Sunday, according to report by Libya Observer.

“I do not want to be part of the failure in Libyan sports,” Al-Shalmani stated.

“We faced difficulties during the previous period”, he added.

Speaking further, Al-Shalmani expressed gratitude to his colleagues and forgave those in the sports sector.

“I thank all members of the General Assembly, and I forgive everyone from all segments of the sports sector,” he said.

NewsBand reports that the Nigeria contingent spent over 13 hours stranded at Al-Abraq Airport after being denied entry into the country.

The team had initially traveled via a chartered flight from Nigeria on Sunday, preparing for the return leg of the qualifier following their victory over Libya in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Friday.

Despite prior clearance to land in Benghazi, Libyan authorities barred the team from entering, locking the airport gates and leaving the players without access to food, water, or communication

Meanwhile, frustrated by the logistical setbacks and the absence of Libyan Football Federation officials to assist, the Super Eagles decided to boycott the match and return home.
