2 killed as Boko Haram attacks police station in Borno

Two police officers were killed after suspected members of Boko Haram terrorists organization on Thursday, launched unexpected attack on a police facility in Borno State.

The attack comes just days after a Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian military in Borno came under heavy attack by Boko Haram fighters.

Six military officers according to a statement by Major General Edward Buba, were killed during the attack.

The Nganzai Police Division came under heavy assault in the wee hours of January 9, 2025.

A statement by the police revealed that two officers were killed during the raid when the terrorists launched an assault that included a grenade attack.

The statement said at approximately 12:10am, armed criminals attempted to breach the police division.

“Gallant officers who were on watch repelled the terrorists, after a series of exchanges in a gun battle. The terrorists threw hand grenades which, unfortunately, landed on a shelter tent behind the division, fatally wounding two officers,” the statement reads.

An assessment of the scene by the Commissioner of Police revealed that two hand grenades were recovered by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Base 13 in Maiduguri.

The bodies of the slain officers were subsequently transported to the State General Hospital in Maiduguri for post-mortem procedures.

The Commissioner of Police commended the bravery of the officers who defended the station and extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers.

“The Command remains dedicated and committed to ensuring the safety and security of all, and we call for calm as normalcy has been restored,” the statement concluded.
