Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, has announced that the Force Force will commence enforcing third-party insurance for all vehicle owners nationwide starting February 1, 2025.
This was disclosed in a statement by the spokesman of the Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
He said the IGP made the declaration during a meeting with Mr. Olusegun Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), on Friday in Abuja.
Egbetokun highlighted that both Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act require all vehicle owners to have third-party insurance before using their vehicles on public roads.
He stressed the significance of compliance, warning that failure to adhere to these laws would result in penalties including fines, imprisonment, or both.
He assured that the police would work closely with relevant stakeholders to uphold safety and security for all citizens.
Meanwhile, earlier, Mr. Omosehin had congratulated the police chief on his accomplishments, particularly noting the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Ltd.
He also called for the police’s assistance in ensuring the successful enforcement of compulsory third-party insurance, which he said provides important benefits for all road users.
