Gunmen attack Ondo communities, leaving at least 20 dead

Five Ondo communities faced a tragic moment when at least 20 individuals were confirmed dead after a brutal attack by suspected bandits.

This devastating incident underscores the persistent security challenges that these communities continue to confront in the region.

This incident occurred in four communities located in the Akure North Local Government Area (LGA) of Ondo State.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, leaving residents in shock and mourning.

The communities impacted by the situation include Aba Alajido, Aba Sunday, Aba Pastor, and Ademekun. Additionally, these areas require immediate attention and support.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the villages late at night, indiscriminately opening fire on residents. Many villagers fled into the nearby bush to escape the onslaught, while others were not as fortunate.

A resident of one of the communities, who gave his name as Sunday, recounted the harrowing experience. Speaking with journalists in Akure, the state capital, he revealed that the attacks began earlier in the week and escalated over the weekend. “They attacked our communities on Friday night when everyone was asleep. They opened gunfire on anyone in sight,” he said.

Many people rushed into the bush for safety; however, some unfortunate individuals lost their lives in the villages.

On Sunday, authorities disclosed that security personnel recovered some victims’ bodies. However, they expressed concern about many residents still missing.

“If they conduct further searches, they will likely discover more deceased individuals in the bush,” he added.

Additionally, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident. Funmilayo Odunlami, the police spokesperson, stated that investigations are ongoing.

The attack on the Aba Pastor community was reported to us on Saturday, she explained, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “Immediately, the command took action to restore normalcy and apprehend the perpetrators.”

Odunlami assured residents that security forces are on the ground to prevent further violence and to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.

The attacks have left the communities in disarray, with many residents displaced and fearful of returning to their homes. Authorities have called for calm and pledged to bring those behind the attacks to justice.

This tragic incident highlights the growing insecurity in parts of Nigeria, where communities continue to face threats from bandits and other criminal elements.As investigations continue, residents and victims’ families confront their grief.
