Nigeria strengthens commitment to democratic governance in West Africa

Nigeria has taken decisive steps to reinforce democratic governance in West Africa by promoting inclusive, transparent, and accountable leadership.

Recently, Hon. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, hosted a high-level briefing on April 14, 2025.

Significantly, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, the UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative, and her delegation participated in the event.

The discussions focused on the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD), a key initiative tackling governance challenges in West Africa.

Importantly, this program aligns with President H.E. Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Democracy pillar of Nigeria’s 4D Foreign Policy Strategy.

During the meeting, Minister Tuggar endorsed the final RPD Programme concept note and implementation roadmap.

Notably, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNDP Nigeria collaborated extensively to develop the roadmap.

The document outlines strategic measures to strengthen democratic institutions, boost civic participation, and build public trust.

Minister Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s leadership in driving democratic renewal, stating, “Our engagement reaffirms Nigeria’s role as a key driver of democratic renewal, working to create resilient governance systems.”

Furthermore, the RPD initiative represents an African-led effort to address regional governance challenges.
