LND meets in Abuja, charts new political course

The League of Northern Democrats (LND) gathered at Abuja’s Nicon Luxury Hotel on May 22, 2025, marking a pivotal moment for the group.

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau led 147 members in discussions that produced key resolutions to reshape northern politics and influence national affairs.

First, members approved the LND constitution while reviewing previous meeting minutes to ensure organizational clarity. They instructed their legal adviser to fast-track official registration, establishing legitimacy before pursuing broader political goals. The assembly then formally endorsed the current leadership structure to strengthen decision-making processes.

Recognizing the need for united opposition, the group pledged support for Senator David Mark’s National Opposition Coalition. This alliance positions the LND strategically as Nigeria prepares for 2027 elections, demonstrating their commitment to challenging dominant political forces through coordinated action.

Discussions then turned to political party options, with members favoring registration of a new party to attract disenchanted independents. However, they kept open the possibility of merging with existing parties should circumstances require alternative approaches to gaining influence.

To amplify northern voices, the LND plans to convene regional groups for unified policy stances on national issues. They also resolved to mobilize northern communities to demand government accountability, particularly regarding constitutional adherence by legislative leaders.

The group took a firm stand against political defections, demanding vacant seats for cross-carpeting lawmakers in Delta and Kebbi states. They emphasized strict constitutional compliance to discourage opportunistic party-switching that undermines democratic representation.

Finally, the LND committed to confronting northern governors over worsening poverty, unemployment and insecurity across the region. They blamed failed governance at state and local levels for these crises, vowing to push for immediate remedial actions through coordinated advocacy efforts.

This Abuja meeting positions the LND as an emerging force in Nigerian politics, ready to challenge the status quo through legal frameworks and grassroots mobilization. Their resolutions signal growing impatience with ineffective leadership and a determination to drive meaningful change across northern communities. The group’s next steps will test their ability to translate bold declarations into tangible political impact as election cycles approach.
