The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) took decisive steps to bolster Nigeria’s democracy by swearing in six new Resident Electoral Commissioners. During the May 30 ceremony at INEC headquarters, Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu emphasized how these appointments complete the commission’s nationwide staffing structure. The event brought together senior officials and family members in a show of support for the incoming RECs.

Prof. Yakubu charged the new commissioners with maintaining the highest standards of electoral integrity. He reminded them their roles demand full-time dedication, requiring both leadership and meticulous supervision. “Conducting elections represents not just an official duty but a sacred trust with the Nigerian people,” the chairman asserted during his address.

The newly inaugurated team blends experience and fresh perspectives. While Dr. Sinikiem and Mr. Gajiram return for second terms, four first-time appointees join the commission. These include former INEC staffers Dr. Idris and Mrs. Ibiyemi, alongside legal practitioner Mr. Ibeziako and administrator Mr. Garba.

In a strategic move to ensure impartiality, INEC deployed the RECs outside their home regions. Dr. Idris will oversee Gombe State operations, while Dr. Sinikiem takes charge in Cross River. The assignments continue with Mrs. Ibiyemi in Ogun, Mr. Gajiram in Taraba, Mr. Ibeziako in Abia, and Mr. Garba in Sokoto State.

Speaking for his colleagues, Dr. Idris pledged to uphold electoral integrity without compromise. “We recognize the gravity of this responsibility to our nation,” he stated, praising INEC’s leadership for its commitment to progressive reforms. The new RECs promised to work transparently with all stakeholders.

The ceremony also revealed crucial election timelines for Ekiti and Osun states. Ekiti’s governorship race will hold on June 20, 2026, with party primaries commencing October 2025. Osun voters will go to the polls August 8, 2026, following primaries scheduled for late 2025.

A poignant moment occurred when attendees observed silence for late Commissioner Major General Alkali. This tribute underscored the solemn responsibilities surrounding electoral administration.

With multiple elections approaching, including pending bye-elections and voter registration exercises, INEC’s latest moves demonstrate its determination to enhance electoral credibility. The commission continues working to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic processes through systematic preparation and inclusive leadership.

These developments come at a critical juncture for Nigeria’s democracy as the nation prepares for another electoral cycle. The appointments and announced timetables reflect INEC’s proactive approach to addressing logistical challenges while maintaining transparency. Stakeholders across the political spectrum will be watching closely as these new RECs assume their duties in their respective states.

The commission’s emphasis on deploying officials outside their home regions demonstrates a commitment to minimizing potential conflicts of interest. This policy, combined with the mix of experienced and new RECs, creates a balanced approach to election management. Political analysts suggest these measures could help reduce perceptions of bias that sometimes surround electoral administration.

As Nigeria moves toward these important elections, the successful implementation of these plans will be crucial for maintaining public trust. The coming months will test both the new RECs’ capabilities and INEC’s overall preparedness to deliver free, fair, and credible elections across the nation.
