National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has joined other dissenting voices, to called on the Federal Government, to reject the idea to sale the nation’s assets in order to bring the country out of recession.

The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), also called on the Federal Government to open the nation’s borders, to allow importation of essential foods, for domestic uses pending when Nigeria would be able to produce enough food to feed its citizens.

NANS described the proposal to sell national assets as a call to economic disaster. In a communiqué by NANS Senate President, Comrade Taiwo Bamigbade and the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Odebunmi Idowu, the student body said, “It will be recalled that successive regimes/administrations have done it in the past by selling the Power Sector, NITEL e.t.c, moves that resulted in nothing but a parasitical attachment to the masses.

Our refineries are part of the nascent in the world, if we can fix them and make it work at optimal capacity, it will definitely address the menace of fuel importation. So, the FG should rather pay more attention to issues of diversification of the economy and immediately readdress the fiscal policy to increase the patronage of made in Nigeria products.”

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Mr Ibuchukwu Ezike, CLO urged the Federal Government to Open border  to free importation of essential commodities and, look elsewhere for the solutions to the economic crisis facing the country and not to sell national assets.

“The call for the sale of public utilities is absolutely uncalled for, and worrisome. We warn the politicians not to take the patience of agonizing, wailing and impoverished Nigerians for granted”.
