BREAKING: Police summon Sowore again after detention and injury ordeal

(DDM) – Nigerian human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has been invited once again by the Nigeria Police Force for questioning, just days after his release from a controversial two-day detention.

DDM gathered that Sowore, a former presidential candidate and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, was on his way to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday to honour the fresh police invitation.

This marks the second time in less than a week that the outspoken activist is being summoned by security operatives.

On August 6, 2025, Sowore honoured a similar invitation from the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit to respond to two petitions against him.

The first petition accused him of cyberbullying, while the second alleged he had forged a police document.

Sowore arrived at the Abuja police headquarters flanked by his legal team and supporters.

What was expected to be a routine engagement quickly escalated into a confrontation over due process.

Sowore demanded to see the petitions before making a statement, but police officers refused to provide them upfront.

By the evening of that day, he had been taken into custody.

During his detention, Sowore alleged that police officers assaulted him, breaking his right hand while attempting to forcibly transfer him to court without his lawyers present.

He claimed he was denied medical treatment and kept incommunicado.

Amnesty International condemned his detention, describing it as a gross violation of human rights and calling for his immediate release.

Protests erupted in Abuja, Lagos, Osun, and Oyo, with civil society groups, youth movements, and opposition figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar denouncing the arrest.

Placards with messages such as “Free Sowore Now” and “Stop Police Brutality” dominated the demonstrations.

Social media campaigns trended nationwide, amplifying demands for his freedom.

After more than 48 hours in custody, Sowore was released on August 8, emerging with his arm in a sling but vowing to continue his activism.

In a live broadcast, he thanked supporters for their solidarity, declaring that the government had “capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement.”

The latest police invitation has raised fears among rights groups that authorities may be targeting Sowore in a campaign of intimidation.

Neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the Inspector General has issued an official statement on the reasons for the new summons.

Sowore has maintained his readiness to face any lawful inquiry, insisting that the struggle for justice in Nigeria will continue.
