(DDM) – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a major victory in the Rivers State local government elections.

The opposition party clinched 20 out of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) in a tightly contested poll held on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State managed to secure only three LGAs in the election.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) confirmed the results on Sunday afternoon at its headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, announced the outcomes of both the chairmanship and vice-chairmanship elections across the state.

However, results of the councillorship elections were still being collated at the time of the announcement.

Background of the election

The local government polls were conducted amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, a stronghold of the PDP since 1999.

Analysts view the APC’s landslide victory as a significant political shift in a state known for its deep-rooted PDP dominance.

Political observers say the result could alter the dynamics of the state’s politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reactions from parties

While APC supporters celebrated what they described as a “historic victory,” PDP members expressed shock and dissatisfaction over the outcome.

Some PDP chieftains alleged irregularities and claimed that the election did not reflect the will of the people.

APC leaders, on the other hand, hailed the result as proof of the party’s growing influence in Rivers State.

Next steps

RSIEC Chairman Odey assured residents that councillorship results would be released in the coming days.

He further called for calm and urged political parties to embrace peace as the final stage of result collation continues.

Political analysts suggest that the election outcome could trigger legal battles from aggrieved candidates, especially from the PDP camp.
