JUST IN: Rivers APC sets conditions for Governor Fubara’s return

(DDM) – The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has declared its readiness to cooperate with Governor Siminalayi Fubara as he prepares to resume office on September 18, 2025.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the party made its position clear during a press briefing addressed by Chief Tony Okocha, the caretaker committee chairman of APC in the state.

Okocha expressed appreciation to Rivers residents for supporting the party during the recently concluded local government elections, where APC reportedly secured victories in 20 out of the state’s 23 local government areas.

He emphasised that while the party was open to working with Governor Fubara for the sake of peace and development, such cooperation would not come without conditions.

According to Okocha, APC would continue to play its role as a watchdog, ensuring that the governor delivers good governance without indulging in what he termed “vicious policies” that may negatively impact the people of Rivers State.

The APC chairman made it clear that constructive criticism would remain part of the party’s strategy, even as it pledged to collaborate on policies that directly benefit the masses.

Okocha described the just concluded council elections as a “dress rehearsal” for the 2027 general elections, noting that the internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) created an opportunity for APC to consolidate its influence in Rivers politics.

He further called on members of the PDP who were dissatisfied with the leadership of the party, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to join the APC ahead of future contests.

Political observers say Okocha’s remarks highlight APC’s growing confidence in Rivers State, where the party has traditionally struggled to challenge PDP’s dominance.

The crisis within the PDP in Rivers has been fuelled by persistent tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as FCT Minister.

Analysts argue that the feud has significantly weakened PDP’s cohesion, opening the door for APC to expand its base across the state.

Governor Fubara, who is expected to return from his official leave on September 18, will likely face increased political pressure from both the opposition and members of his own party.

The APC has vowed to resist any governance style it perceives as repressive, while maintaining that it is committed to defending the interests of Rivers people.

Okocha’s statement signals that the political atmosphere in Rivers will remain tense in the coming months, with both PDP and APC strategising ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, residents of Rivers State are watching closely to see how Governor Fubara will manage his return to office in the face of intensifying political opposition.
