(DDM) – The Southeast Zonal Coordinator of the Nigeria Youth World Council (NYWC), Hon. Comrade Amechi T. Agu, has called on Nigerians, especially young people, to see Independence Day as a reminder that freedom carries responsibility.

In a press release to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Agu said the sacrifices made by the nation’s founding fathers who fought for freedom from colonial rule must not be in vain.

He urged leaders and citizens alike to recommit themselves to building a stronger and more united nation.

“Independence Day reminds us that Nigeria is the only country we have. Our past leaders paid a great price to secure this freedom.

We owe it to them and to future generations to honor their legacy by working for progress, justice, and unity,” Agu declared.

He noted that the Southeast has always been known for enterprise, innovation, and resilience, and called on young people across the region to channel these strengths not only into personal growth but also toward national development.

According to Agu, the 65th anniversary should be a moment of sober reflection on the country’s challenges and opportunities.

He urged government at all levels to make urgent investments in the Nigerian youth, who he described as the nation’s greatest asset.

“Today should not only be about celebration but also reflection. Leaders must tackle corruption, poverty, hunger, unemployment, and insecurity with sincerity and urgency.

These issues continue to undermine our growth and threaten our future.

Nigeria’s independence must translate into real freedom, freedom from want, fear, and hopelessness,” the NYWC zonal coordinator stated.

Agu acknowledged that Nigeria is not yet where it should be but stressed that progress has been made since 1960.

He expressed confidence that with true democracy, patriotism, and accountability, the country will eventually reach its desired destination.

“We must celebrate Independence with pride, not in sorrow. Though the journey has been difficult, we believe in Nigeria’s future.

With determination, sacrifice, and unity, we will build a nation that truly reflects the hopes of our founding fathers,” he said.

The statement ended with a patriotic pledge:

> “Nigeria is the only country we have.

We believe in her.

We will serve her.

We will build her.

Together, we pledge to stand united, for peace, for progress, and for a greater Nigeria!”

The NYWC, a youth-based organization with national and international presence, has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people to actively participate in governance, leadership, and community development.
