The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved several road contracts and revisions totaling over N400 billion to enhance Nigeria’s road infrastructure.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced the decisions while addressing State House correspondents after Thursday’s FEC meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Umahi revealed that he presented 11 proposals to the council, including nine for revisions of existing projects and two for new road contracts.

Among the approvals was N43 billion for the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Phase Two, Section Two, to address failed sections and complete underpasses and ramps.

Additionally, the dualisation of the Mushin–NNPC Junction–Papa Oshodi Expressway was revised from N11 billion to N19 billion due to cost adjustments.

The council also approved the construction of Section Three of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, covering 162.97 kilometers from Badagry through Ogun to the Oyo State border, at a cost of N3.39 billion per kilometer.

Other inherited projects, such as the Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba road and the old Enugu–Onitsha road, were revised for additional funding and design changes.

For the 216-kilometer Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba road, the first 31 kilometers under Phase One will cost N43 billion, while the remaining stretch will be completed as funds allow.

Umahi highlighted the redesign of the East–West Road to improve traffic flow and pavement strength, with Phase One costs maintained at N156 billion.

He noted that some state governments had taken over federal road projects to address funding challenges and expedite completion.

For instance, the Ota–Idi-Iroko road in Ogun State was revised to include rigid concrete pavement and an additional bridge, raising its cost from N38 billion to N52 billion.

Umahi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using concrete pavements for durability and cost efficiency, emphasizing that road infrastructure remains a priority for supporting economic growth and improving mobility across the country.
