The abducted priest of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, in Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Reverend Edwin Achi, has reportedly died while in captivity, the Diocese of Kaduna confirmed on Wednesday.
Reverend Achi and his wife were kidnapped from their residence in Nissi Village, near the Kaduna Refinery, on October 28, 2025, by armed bandits. The kidnappers later demanded a ₦600 million ransom for their release.
In a statement, the Diocese described the death of the cleric as a painful loss to the entire church, the clergy, and all who benefitted from his ministry. “His transition is a painful loss to the entire Diocese, the clergy, the Church family, and all who were blessed by his faithful ministry, humble spirit, and unwavering devotion to the service of God,” the Diocese said.
The church also prayed for the safe release of Reverend Achi’s wife and daughter, who remain in the kidnappers’ custody.
This tragic incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Kaduna State, where communities continue to face threats from banditry and violent abductions. Authorities have been called upon to intensify rescue operations and safeguard vulnerable residents.
