JUST IN: Kano Loses Two Lawmakers Hours Apart

Two members of the Kano State House of Assembly have died just hours apart, state government officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The deceased lawmakers are Hon. Aminu Saad Ungogo, who represented Ungogo State Constituency, and Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, the lawmaker for Kano Municipal Constituency.

Both lawmakers reportedly passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, throwing the Kano State legislature into mourning.

The deaths were first announced by the Special Adviser on Information to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Ibrahim Adam, in a post on his official Facebook page.

“May Allah forgive your shortcomings. Late Aminu Sa’adu of Ungogo Constituency. Late Sarki Aliyu Daneji of KMC Constituency,” Adam wrote. “We lost both of them this evening.”

The development was later confirmed by the Director of Media and Public Relations at the Kano Government House, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who provided further details in separate statements.

According to Dawakin Tofa, Hon. Aminu Saad Ungogo died after a brief illness. He said the lawmaker passed away earlier in the day and was scheduled to be buried the same evening in his hometown of Ungogo, in accordance with Islamic rites.

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihir raji’un. Hon. Aminu Saad Ungogo, Member representing Ungogo State Constituency, died today after a brief illness and will be buried this evening in Ungogo, Kano,” Dawakin Tofa stated.

Barely an hour after Ungogo’s death, Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji was also confirmed dead.

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihir raji’un. Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, member representing Kano Municipal Constituency at the Kano State House of Assembly, died today an hour after the death of his counterpart,” Dawakin Tofa said.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of Daneji’s death had not been officially disclosed.

The double tragedy has sent shockwaves across Kano State, with lawmakers, political leaders, and residents expressing shock and grief over the sudden loss of the two legislators.

The Kano State House of Assembly is yet to issue a formal statement, while condolences continue to pour in from across the state.

The deaths create vacancies in the Assembly, which are expected to be filled through by-elections in line with electoral laws.
