Gunmen have attacked Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving an undisclosed number of people dead and several others injured.
Local sources said the attack occurred suddenly when the assailants stormed the community and opened fire indiscriminately, triggering panic among residents.
Many fled to neighbouring communities and nearby bushes to escape the violence.
Residents described the incident as unprecedented in recent years, noting that the community has not experienced such an attack for a long time.
As of the time of reporting, the exact number of casualties could not be independently confirmed, as many residents have dispersed and the full scale of the attack remains unclear.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, told Channels Television that the attack took place and that security agencies had been deployed to the area. He said police operatives were assessing the situation, including the number of fatalities and injuries, adding that an official statement would be issued in due course.
Some residents, who requested anonymity, said security personnel had arrived in the community following the attack.
Community members have appealed to the state government and security agencies for urgent intervention, describing the incident as deadly.
Efforts to reach the village head for comment were unsuccessful as calls to his phone were not answered.
