(DDM) – Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has completed a loan move from Premier League side Brentford to Coventry City in the EFL Championship.

The 28-year-old Nigerian international will remain at Coventry until the end of the season, with an option for the club to make the deal permanent.

Onyeka struggled for playing time at Brentford this season, featuring for only 88 minutes in the Premier League and starting just once under manager Keith Andrews.

Despite reported interest from Valencia and Sheffield United, Coventry City secured Onyeka’s services after persistent negotiations and the midfielder’s willingness to move.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the loan deal includes an option to buy, giving Coventry a chance to sign Onyeka permanently at the conclusion of the season.

Onyeka’s contract with Brentford runs until the summer of 2027, with his current market value estimated at €7 million, suggesting Coventry could acquire him at a reduced fee following the loan spell.

Coventry City, currently top of the EFL Championship, are seeking experienced players to bolster their promotion push to the Premier League.

Onyeka’s arrival brings Premier League and international experience to Frank Lampard’s squad as the club aims to maintain its lead in a competitive race against Middlesbrough and other promotion contenders.

The midfielder is expected to make his Coventry debut in the upcoming match against Oxford United.

Onyeka becomes the fourth Nigerian to represent Coventry City, joining a list that includes Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Dele Adebola, and Bright Enobakhare.

Observers say Onyeka’s addition could provide the creativity and midfield stability Coventry needs to strengthen its title challenge and secure a Premier League return.

The loan move also offers Onyeka an opportunity to revitalize his career after limited appearances in the Premier League this season.

Coventry City’s management has expressed confidence that Onyeka’s experience and skillset will help guide younger players and improve the team’s performance in high-pressure matches.

Fans have welcomed the signing, highlighting Onyeka’s work rate, ball control, and ability to link defense and attack as assets that could be pivotal in crucial Championship fixtures.
