The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that Nigerian troops and about 100 United States military personnel have commenced joint training exercises and intelligence-focused cooperation initiatives aimed at strengthening national security.
According to the DHQ, the collaboration is designed to enhance Nigeria’s operational capacity to counter extremist groups and protect vulnerable communities.
Earlier reports indicated that at least three US military aircraft delivered equipment and supplies to support counter-insurgency operations, with landings recorded at military bases in the North-East, including Borno State.
Purpose of the deployment
The DHQ stated that the deployment followed a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for military training support, technical assistance, and intelligence sharing.
“The arrival is planned and deliberate,” the statement said, noting that the cooperation emerged from engagements between Nigerian and US defence officials.
Advisory role, not combat operations
The US personnel were described as technical specialists serving strictly in advisory and training roles rather than combat operations.
The DHQ emphasised that all activities will be conducted under the authority and control of the Nigerian government and in coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Strengthening counter-terrorism capacity
The joint exercises are expected to improve the military’s ability to identify and neutralise extremist threats while enhancing intelligence sharing and specialised technical capabilities.
The DHQ reiterated that the Armed Forces remain committed to defeating terrorist groups threatening Nigeria’s sovereignty and safety, assuring citizens of transparency in the ongoing military cooperation.
