A new legal storm has erupted in the high-profile custody dispute involving Nigerian music superstar Davido and Sophia Momodu, as her lawyer, Ebelechukwu Egeonu Enedah, has filed a ₦1 billion lawsuit against the singer over alleged cyberbullying, defamation, and threats directed at her following a tense February court session.
The controversy began after a heated hearing in the ongoing custody case for Davido and Momodu’s daughter, Imade. Following the proceedings, Davido took to social media to announce the withdrawal of his custody application, citing frustration with the courtroom events. In his posts, he accused Enedah of referencing his late son during the hearing, calling it a “low blow.” In what appears to have been a mistake, Davido tagged gospel artiste Tosin Bee instead of the lawyer, but the comment ignited a wave of online criticism that ultimately targeted Enedah.
In response, Enedah, a senior partner at PUNUKA Attorneys & Solicitors with more than 20 years of experience, issued a formal letter dated February 24, describing Davido’s remarks as libelous, damaging to her professional reputation, and emotionally distressing. She argued that branding her “the worst lawyer ever” was a deliberate attempt to malign her for simply performing her legal duties. The letter also highlighted concerns for her personal safety and that of her family, citing the intensity of the backlash and online harassment she has endured.
Enedah’s legal team stressed that matters involving custody of a minor should remain private and focused on the child’s best interests. They warned that Davido’s public commentary has introduced unnecessary instability into the case and undermined the judicial process.
The lawsuit demands that Davido immediately cease all public remarks about Enedah or the case, retract his social media posts, issue formal apologies across his verified platforms, and publish apologies in at least two national newspapers. Additionally, the lawyer seeks ₦1 billion in damages, giving the singer seven days to comply before the matter escalates to the Lagos High Court.
Legal observers note that this development could significantly complicate the ongoing custody proceedings, as it brings defamation and cyberbullying allegations into the mix. While Davido has yet to respond officially to the lawsuit, the case has sparked a heated debate on social media, with fans and legal analysts weighing in on the boundaries between personal expression, social media commentary, and professional conduct in sensitive legal matters.
As this story unfolds, it underscores the increasing impact of social media on legal disputes, particularly when high-profile figures are involved. Many are watching closely to see whether the court will intervene to curb online harassment and how the ₦1 billion lawsuit might influence both the custody proceedings and Davido’s public image.
