(DDM) – A civil society organization (CSO) has called on residents of Borno and Yobe States to actively support anti-terrorism initiatives, emphasizing the crucial role of community collaboration with security forces in safeguarding the region’s economy and future.
The CSO highlighted that terrorism continues to disrupt livelihoods, displace families, and undermine efforts at socio-economic development in Northeast Nigeria. Residents were urged to report suspicious activities, cooperate with military and paramilitary units, and participate in community policing programs aimed at preventing attacks.
According to the CSO, sustainable peace cannot be achieved solely through military action; community involvement remains vital in intelligence gathering and early warning mechanisms. Leaders in towns and villages were specifically encouraged to educate youths on the dangers of extremism and the importance of remaining vigilant.
The organization pointed out that many local businesses, markets, and farmlands have been targeted in previous attacks, leading to economic losses and food insecurity. By supporting anti-terrorism efforts, citizens not only protect lives but also ensure the continuity of trade, agriculture, and education in affected areas.
The CSO further stressed that collaboration between residents and security forces could significantly reduce the influence of terrorist groups, enabling internally displaced persons (IDPs) to safely return home and rebuild their communities. Past initiatives where locals cooperated with authorities have led to arrests of insurgents and recovery of stolen goods, illustrating the impact of joint efforts.
Community engagement programs such as awareness campaigns, town hall meetings, and neighborhood vigilance networks were recommended to strengthen trust between residents and security agencies. Women, youth, and traditional leaders were identified as key stakeholders in promoting peace and resilience in their communities.
The CSO also appealed to local and state governments to provide resources and incentives that encourage community participation in security initiatives. Funding for community patrols, support for victims of attacks, and investment in local infrastructure were highlighted as essential measures to reinforce anti-terrorism strategies.
“Protecting lives and property is a collective responsibility. Every resident has a role in securing peace and fostering development in Borno and Yobe,” the CSO noted in its statement.
In conclusion, the CSO reiterated that the fight against terrorism is not only a security issue but also a development imperative. Strengthening community-military partnerships was described as the most effective path to restoring safety, economic growth, and hope for the region’s future.
