Experts Urge Farmers to Prepare for Heavy Rains, Adopt Climate-Smart Practices

(DDM) — Agricultural experts have advised Nigerian farmers to begin early preparations for anticipated heavy rainfall, warning that failure to plan adequately could lead to significant crop losses during the upcoming planting season.

DDM learned that the advisory comes amid growing concerns about changing weather patterns linked to climate variability, which have increasingly disrupted traditional farming cycles across the country. Experts note that unpredictable rainfall intensity and timing have made it necessary for farmers to adopt more strategic and informed approaches to cultivation.

According to agricultural specialists, one of the key mistakes farmers make is rushing into planting immediately after the first rains. They caution that early rainfall does not always indicate the full onset of the rainy season, and premature planting could expose crops to dry spells or flooding, ultimately affecting yield and profitability.

The experts recommend that farmers monitor weather forecasts and soil moisture conditions before commencing planting activities. They also emphasize the importance of staggered planting, which allows farmers to reduce the risk of total crop failure in the event of erratic rainfall. By spreading planting dates, farmers can improve their chances of securing at least partial harvests.

In addition, the use of climate-smart agricultural practices has been strongly encouraged. These include the adoption of improved seed varieties that are resistant to flooding or drought, proper land preparation techniques, and efficient water management systems. Experts also highlight the need for drainage systems on farmlands to prevent waterlogging, which can damage crops and reduce soil fertility.

Climate change has continued to pose serious challenges to Nigeria’s agricultural sector, which remains a major source of livelihood for millions of citizens. Increased rainfall intensity in some regions, coupled with prolonged dry spells in others, has created uncertainty for farmers who rely heavily on predictable seasonal patterns.

Agricultural extension services have also been urged to intensify their outreach efforts to rural communities. Experts believe that timely dissemination of information on weather forecasts, planting techniques, and risk management strategies is essential to helping farmers adapt to changing conditions.

Furthermore, stakeholders have called on the government to support farmers through access to modern farming inputs, irrigation facilities, and financial assistance. They argue that strengthening the agricultural sector is critical not only for food security but also for economic stability, especially in the face of rising food prices.

As the rainy season approaches, farmers across Nigeria are being encouraged to take precautionary measures, remain informed, and embrace innovative farming techniques. Experts stress that proactive planning and adaptation will be key to minimizing losses and ensuring sustainable agricultural productivity in an increasingly uncertain climate environment.
