Senate President Godswill Akpabio has restated strong support for the creation of Anioma State, saying Asaba will serve as its capital if the proposal is approved.

He made this known while speaking at the South-South zonal congress of the APC held in Asaba, where key political figures and governors from the region were present.

Akpabio said the push for Anioma State has the backing of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as part of efforts to promote fairness, development, and better governance.

According to him, creating the new state would help bring government closer to the people and improve administrative efficiency.

The Senate President also explained that if Anioma State is carved out, Warri would become the capital of the remaining Delta State.

He pointed to Warri’s strong infrastructure including an airport, seaport, oil company presence, and other key facilities as reasons it is well-suited for the role.

Akpabio described the agitation for Anioma State as a long-standing demand rooted in equity and balanced development.

He noted that the proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, has gained serious traction within the National Assembly.

“The Senate fully supports this initiative,” Akpabio said, expressing confidence that the state will eventually be created.

The move appears to be gathering momentum, with reports that dozens of senators have already backed the proposal.

Supporters believe the creation of Anioma State would drive economic growth, decentralise governance, and bring more development to the region.

Akpabio also urged political stakeholders across the South-South to remain united and support the federal government’s agenda, saying it will strengthen national unity and ensure long-term growth.
