Tinubu Expands CNG Initiative To Include Electric Vehicles

(DDM) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to include electric vehicles as part of efforts to transform Nigeria’s transportation and energy sectors.

The decision signals a strategic shift aimed at broadening the scope of the initiative beyond gas-powered vehicles to embrace cleaner and more sustainable mobility options.

Officials say the expansion is designed to reduce dependence on petrol and diesel while promoting alternative energy sources in the transport sector.

The move comes amid rising fuel costs and increasing pressure on households and businesses struggling with transportation expenses.

By incorporating electric vehicles, the government aims to accelerate Nigeria’s transition toward environmentally friendly transportation systems.

Experts note that electric vehicles produce lower emissions compared to traditional fuel-powered cars, making them a key component of global climate strategies.

The CNG initiative was initially introduced to provide a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol, especially following fuel subsidy reforms.

Its expansion to include electric vehicles reflects a broader vision to modernise Nigeria’s energy consumption patterns.

Analysts say the initiative could help reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in major cities.

However, they also caution that the success of electric vehicle adoption will depend on infrastructure development.

Key challenges include the availability of charging stations, stable electricity supply, and affordability of electric vehicles.

Stakeholders have called for investments in charging infrastructure and incentives to encourage adoption among Nigerians.

There are also concerns about the country’s current power supply limitations, which could affect the practicality of electric mobility.

Government officials, however, insist that the policy will be implemented alongside broader energy reforms.

The initiative is expected to create new opportunities in the automotive and energy sectors, including job creation and technology transfer.

Industry players believe that local assembly of electric vehicles could further boost economic growth.

The expansion also aligns Nigeria with global trends where countries are increasingly adopting cleaner transportation technologies.

Observers say the success of the programme will depend on effective execution, policy consistency, and collaboration with the private sector.

The development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s effort to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
