Court Acquits Ex-Aviation Minister Oduah After Funds Restitution

(DDM) – The Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama has discharged former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, following the restitution of funds to the Federal Government.

The ruling was delivered on Thursday in Abuja after the court reviewed the terms of settlement and restitution made in the case.

Oduah was previously facing charges linked to alleged financial misconduct during her tenure as Minister of Aviation.

However, the court noted that the restitution of funds formed a key basis for the termination of proceedings against her.

Legal observers say the decision reflects the increasing use of restitution and plea-based settlements in corruption-related cases.

The prosecution did not oppose the application for discharge after confirming that the agreed conditions had been fulfilled.

Court officials stated that the matter was concluded in line with applicable legal provisions guiding settlement in criminal proceedings.

Oduah, who served as Minister of Aviation between 2011 and 2014, has been involved in several legal battles over the years.

Her tenure was previously marked by controversy surrounding procurement processes within the aviation sector.

The latest ruling effectively brings an end to one of the long-running cases against her.

Observers note that restitution-based resolutions are becoming more common in Nigeria’s anti-corruption enforcement approach.

Some legal analysts argue that such settlements help recover public funds faster, while others raise concerns about deterrence.

They say the balance between justice and recovery of stolen assets remains a subject of ongoing debate.

The court’s decision did not include additional penalties beyond the restitution already made.

Oduah was present in court during the proceedings and did not contest the outcome.

The Federal Government has in recent years intensified efforts to recover misappropriated funds through legal and negotiated means.

Anti-corruption agencies often pursue asset recovery alongside prosecution in financial crime cases.

The conclusion of the case adds to a growing list of politically exposed persons who have resolved allegations through restitution.

Further details on the exact amount refunded were not immediately disclosed in court.

The development marks the formal closure of the legal proceedings against the former minister.
