(DDM) — A court in Ilorin has ordered the remand of two tricyclists over their alleged involvement in the assault of a human rights lawyer and his wife following a dispute on a public road.

The suspects were arraigned before the court on charges linked to the alleged attack, which reportedly stemmed from an argument over road obstruction that escalated into violence.

According to court proceedings, the incident occurred when the lawyer confronted the tricyclists over alleged obstruction, leading to a heated exchange that later turned physical.

Witness accounts indicate that the situation quickly deteriorated, resulting in injuries to both the lawyer and his wife, an incident that has drawn widespread concern within legal and civil society circles.

The prosecution informed the court that the accused persons engaged in conduct capable of breaching public peace and causing harm, urging the court to remand them pending further investigation.

Counsel representing the defendants, however, appealed for leniency, arguing that the matter arose from a misunderstanding and could be resolved amicably.

Despite the plea, the presiding magistrate ruled that the suspects be remanded in custody to allow for proper investigation and ensure that justice is not compromised.

Legal practitioners have condemned the alleged assault, describing it as an attack not only on individuals but also on the rule of law and civil conduct in public spaces.

They emphasized that disputes, especially minor ones such as road disagreements, should never escalate into violence, calling for increased public awareness on conflict resolution.

Residents in Ilorin have also expressed concern over the incident, noting a growing trend of road-related altercations that sometimes result in serious consequences.

Security experts say the case underscores the need for stricter enforcement of laws governing public conduct and the importance of promoting civility among road users.

They further stressed that acts of violence against legal practitioners and civilians must be treated with seriousness to deter future occurrences.

As the case proceeds, observers say the outcome will serve as a test of the justice system’s response to public assaults and its ability to uphold accountability.
