(DDM) — Authorities in Enugu State have confirmed a fatal outbreak of Rabies in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area, prompting urgent public health warnings and calls for immediate preventive action.
The state government disclosed that the outbreak has already resulted in at least one death, raising concerns about the spread of the deadly viral disease, which is primarily transmitted through bites from infected animals, especially dogs.
Health officials warned that rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, making early intervention and prevention critical to saving lives.
Residents have been urged to exercise caution, particularly in handling pets and avoiding contact with stray animals, as the risk of transmission remains high in affected communities.
The government advised that any individual bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal should seek immediate medical attention, stressing that prompt treatment can prevent the virus from developing into a life-threatening condition.
Public health authorities also emphasized the importance of vaccinating domestic animals, noting that widespread vaccination of dogs remains the most effective way to control and eliminate rabies transmission.
Veterinary and health teams have reportedly been mobilised to the affected area to carry out surveillance, vaccination campaigns, and community sensitisation efforts aimed at containing the outbreak.
Experts say rabies remains a significant public health concern in many parts of Nigeria due to low vaccination coverage, poor awareness, and the presence of stray animals.
They stressed that community participation is essential in controlling the disease, urging residents to report suspected cases and cooperate with health officials.
