(DDM) – The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory has issued a strong warning to youths against engaging in ballot snatching, electoral violence, and political thuggery ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) notes that the police boss gave the warning in Abuja while addressing concerns over rising political activities and early signs of tension in the build-up to the polls.
He cautioned that security agencies would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the electoral process or undermine democratic institutions.
According to him, individuals or groups found engaging in violence or illegal electoral practices would face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner emphasised that elections must be conducted in a peaceful, free, and fair atmosphere to reflect the will of the people.
He urged young people to resist being used by politicians as tools for violence and manipulation.
The police chief noted that youths are often the most affected by the consequences of electoral unrest, including arrests, injuries, and long-term legal implications.
He advised them to instead channel their energy into constructive civic engagement and lawful political participation.
Security agencies, he said, have already begun implementing strategies to prevent violence and ensure adequate protection of lives and property during the election period.
These measures include increased surveillance, intelligence gathering, and collaboration with other security organisations.
The Commissioner also called on political actors to play by the rules and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could incite violence.
He stressed that politicians must take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters.
Observers say early warnings from security authorities are crucial in curbing electoral violence, which has historically marred elections in parts of Nigeria.
They noted that proactive engagement with youths could help reduce the likelihood of unrest.
Civil society groups have also echoed similar concerns, urging stakeholders to prioritise peace and democratic values.
The development comes as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and aspirants already positioning themselves.
Authorities reiterated that maintaining peace and order remains a top priority as the country prepares for another electoral cycle.
Residents of the FCT have been encouraged to cooperate with security agencies and report any suspicious activities.
The police command assured the public of its commitment to ensuring a safe and credible electoral process.
