ABUJA — A powerful windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has damaged sections of the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal in Nyanya, raising fresh concerns over infrastructure durability and public safety in the Federal Capital Territory.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, affected parts of the modern transport facility located in Nyanya, a densely populated suburb of Abuja, where commuters rely heavily on road transport for daily movement.

Eyewitnesses reported that strong winds tore through sections of the terminal’s roofing and structural components, leaving visible damage and exposing parts of the building to the elements. The storm, which lasted for a short period, was described by residents as unusually intense.

The Kugbo Bus Terminal, one of the flagship transport projects aimed at easing congestion and improving urban mobility, was recently completed as part of broader infrastructure upgrades in the Federal Capital Territory. Its damage so soon after construction has sparked public debate over building standards and quality control.

Residents and commuters in the area expressed concern about the safety of public infrastructure, especially facilities designed to accommodate large numbers of people daily. Some questioned whether the construction met the necessary engineering and environmental resilience standards required for such projects.

Authorities are yet to release a detailed assessment of the extent of the damage, but officials are expected to conduct structural evaluations to determine the level of repairs needed and whether any design or construction flaws contributed to the incident.

Urban development experts note that extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and windstorms, are becoming more frequent in parts of Nigeria, putting pressure on infrastructure systems that may not be adequately designed to withstand such conditions.

The development has reignited discussions around climate resilience in public infrastructure projects, with stakeholders calling for stricter adherence to building codes and improved oversight during construction.

Transport operators who use the terminal have also raised concerns about potential disruptions to operations, as the facility plays a key role in managing traffic flow and providing organized transport services in the area.

Emergency response teams were reportedly deployed to the site to secure the area and prevent accidents, while commuters were advised to exercise caution pending further inspections.

This incident adds to a growing list of infrastructure-related concerns in urban centres, where rapid development is sometimes criticized for prioritizing speed over durability.

As investigations continue, residents are demanding accountability and assurances that public projects will be built to withstand environmental challenges, ensuring safety and long-term value for taxpayers.
