ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE — The Ogun State Government has declared its full support for the 2026 edition of the Ogun Women Run, a women-centred 5-kilometre road race scheduled to hold in Abeokuta on Saturday, April 11, as part of ongoing efforts to promote fitness, wellness, and female participation in sports across the state.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment while welcoming athletes, stakeholders, fitness enthusiasts, and participants expected to converge on the state capital for the fourth edition of the annual sporting event. Officials described the race as a growing platform for encouraging healthy lifestyles among women and strengthening community engagement through sports.

The Ogun Women Run, which has steadily gained popularity since its inception, is designed as a mass participation race that brings together women from different backgrounds, including professionals, students, fitness trainers, and recreational runners. Organisers say the initiative is not only competitive but also symbolic of empowerment, unity, and wellness advocacy.

According to the organisers, the 5km race route will wind through designated streets in Abeokuta, with safety measures, medical support, and traffic control arrangements already being coordinated in collaboration with relevant government agencies. Authorities have assured participants that adequate security personnel will be deployed to ensure a smooth and incident-free event.

The event has in previous editions attracted significant attention due to its focus on encouraging women to embrace physical exercise as part of a healthier lifestyle. It also serves as a platform for talent discovery in athletics, particularly among younger participants who may progress into competitive sports at regional and national levels.

Officials in the state sports sector noted that the Ogun Women Run aligns with broader government policies aimed at promoting grassroots sports development and increasing female representation in sporting activities. They added that such initiatives contribute to social inclusion and help build stronger community identity.

Background discussions around the race highlight the growing recognition of fitness-based events across Nigeria, where road races and recreational runs have become popular tools for public health awareness campaigns. In Ogun State, the event has gradually evolved into an annual calendar attraction that draws both local and visiting participants.

The state government’s support is also seen as part of wider efforts to position Ogun State as a hub for sporting activities in the South-West region. Over the years, the state has invested in sports infrastructure and encouraged partnerships with private organisers to boost participation in athletics and recreational events.

Health experts have consistently emphasised the importance of events like the Ogun Women Run in addressing lifestyle-related health challenges, including obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and stress-related conditions. They argue that regular physical activity, even in non-competitive formats, contributes significantly to long-term wellbeing.

As preparations continue, organisers have expressed optimism that the 2026 edition will record higher participation numbers compared to previous years, reflecting growing awareness and enthusiasm among women in the state and beyond.

The Ogun Women Run is expected to feature pre-race fitness sessions, warm-up exercises, and post-race engagement activities aimed at promoting community bonding and sustained interest in sports participation.
