Kano Assembly withdraws impeachment proceeding against ex-dep gov

Kano State House of Assembly has withdrawn the impeachment notice against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, following his recent resignation.

The move comes after Gwarzo stepped down from office, rendering the impeachment process unnecessary.

A motion to that effect was moved by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yangurasa, at plenary yesterday.

The Majority Leader, while moving the motion, insisted that proceeding with the matter after his resignation would be pointless.

He explained that in line with Order 3, Rule 6 A, he decided to withdraw the motion following the voluntary resignation of the former deputy governor.

Hussaini added: “We have withdrawn all charges against him and the matter has been laid to rest. We will no longer pursue these offences because our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue?

“We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled,” he added.

The House had, on March 5, initiated impeachment proceedings against the former deputy governor.

In the notice, he was accused of gross misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.

While reading the petition, the Majority Leader had aligned the impeachment notice to the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.
