ENUGU, NIGERIA — A civic group known as Aku Governance Watch (AGW) has officially endorsed Obodoeze Ocho, popularly referred to as Ochoudo 2027, for the Enugu State governorship election scheduled for 2027.
DDM learnt that the endorsement was announced following what the group described as extensive consultations and evaluation of the political and economic conditions in Enugu State.
Aku Governance Watch, which reportedly boasts over 900 active members, said its decision was motivated by a desire for a new leadership direction that prioritises the welfare of citizens and delivers measurable development outcomes.
The group stated that many of its members have been directly impacted by what they described as excessive taxation policies under the administration of Governor Peter Mbah.
According to the organisation, while the state government has expanded its revenue base, residents have not experienced corresponding improvements in infrastructure, public services, or overall quality of life.
Members also raised concerns about rising insecurity, worsening economic hardship, and what they termed exclusion in governance, which they say has left many citizens feeling disconnected from decision-making processes.
They further pointed to declining purchasing power among residents, arguing that economic pressures continue to mount without sufficient relief or policy interventions to cushion the effects.
Background analysis shows that taxation and revenue generation have become central issues in subnational governance across Nigeria, as state governments seek to boost internally generated revenue amid declining federal allocations.
However, policy analysts note that increased taxation often attracts criticism when citizens do not perceive visible improvements in infrastructure, social services, and economic opportunities.
Aku Governance Watch expressed disappointment that despite increased revenue efforts, many residents still struggle with basic living conditions, emphasizing that governance should be transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the people.
In endorsing Obodoeze Ocho, the group highlighted his proposed agenda, which it said focuses on inclusive leadership, economic revitalisation, and institutional reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in governance.
They described him as a candidate capable of repositioning Enugu State for sustainable growth and addressing the challenges currently facing the state.
The group also called on other civil society organisations, community leaders, and stakeholders to support the Ochoudo 2027 movement, describing it as a collective effort to redefine governance in the state.
Observers note that endorsements from civic groups, while not always decisive, can influence public perception and contribute to momentum in the build-up to elections.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship race, such endorsements are expected to shape alliances, campaign narratives, and voter engagement strategies.
The development signals growing interest in alternative leadership options within Enugu State, as discussions around governance, accountability, and economic performance continue to dominate public discourse.
