The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has cautioned broadcasters against unethical conduct, warning that violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code will attract sanctions as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, the commission said it had observed a decline in professionalism across news and current affairs programmes, with some presenters failing to uphold standards of fairness, balance, and neutrality.
According to the NBC, certain anchors have been expressing personal opinions as facts, denying opposing views adequate representation, and allowing inflammatory or divisive content on air.
The commission stressed that any presenter found bullying or intimidating guests, or denying fair hearing to alternative viewpoints, would be deemed to have committed a Class B breach under the broadcasting code.
“Any anchor or presenter who expresses personal opinion as fact, bullies a guest, or compromises neutrality will face sanctions,” the statement said.
The NBC also emphasised that editorial responsibility lies solely with broadcasters and cannot be shifted to guests, even during live programmes.
Raising further concern, the commission noted the increasing use of broadcast platforms by political actors to air content capable of inciting unrest, spreading hate speech, and undermining national unity.
It warned that strict compliance with the broadcasting code would be enforced, adding that any inflammatory, divisive, or unverified content would attract regulatory action.
As preparations intensify for the 2027 elections, the commission urged media organisations to uphold responsible journalism and ensure that broadcast platforms promote credible information and national cohesion.
