CALABAR, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has activated emergency response measures, including contact tracing, after confirming a new case of COVID-19 in Cross River State, raising fresh public health concerns in the region.

The confirmation was announced on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at approximately 12:00 p.m., through an official public health update issued in Calabar, where authorities detailed immediate containment steps following the detection of the case.

According to health officials, the confirmed case involves a 53-year-old expatriate who tested positive for the virus, marking a significant development in a state that had previously reported low or minimal infection figures during earlier phases of the pandemic. The patient is currently under medical supervision, while efforts are ongoing to prevent further spread.

The NCDC stated that it has swiftly initiated contact tracing protocols to identify individuals who may have come into close contact with the infected person. This process involves tracking, testing, and monitoring all possible contacts to contain any potential outbreak before it escalates.

Health authorities have also begun reinforcing surveillance systems within the state, particularly at entry points such as airports and major transit hubs, to ensure early detection of additional cases. Medical teams have been mobilised to support local health infrastructure and coordinate response strategies with state officials.

The re-emergence of a COVID-19 case in Cross River has prompted renewed calls for public vigilance, with officials urging residents to adhere to preventive measures including regular hand hygiene, use of face masks in crowded places, and prompt reporting of symptoms.

Public health experts note that while global attention to COVID-19 has reduced in recent years, isolated cases continue to pose risks, particularly in areas with lower testing rates or reduced public awareness. They stress that rapid response actions such as contact tracing remain critical tools in preventing community transmission.

Cross River State had previously been at the centre of national attention during earlier phases of the pandemic due to its unique reporting patterns and public health responses. The latest development is expected to test the preparedness of both state and federal health systems in managing potential resurgence scenarios.

As containment efforts continue, residents and stakeholders are expected to cooperate with health officials to ensure that the situation is brought under control swiftly and effectively.
