IKOT EKPENE, AKWA IBOM — Security operatives have recovered explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre in Akwa Ibom State, preventing what officials described as a potential major security breach within the correctional facility.

The operation led to the discovery of dangerous materials, including two 90mm high-explosive rounds, during a coordinated security inspection carried out within the custodial environment.

Authorities said the recovery was made as part of routine and intelligence-driven checks aimed at strengthening internal security and preventing unauthorised possession of prohibited items within correctional facilities.

The discovery immediately triggered heightened security protocols at the centre, with officers securing the area and ensuring that all inmates and staff were accounted for during the sweep.

Preliminary assessments suggest the explosive devices were not meant for lawful use within the facility, raising concerns over how such materials were introduced into a highly restricted environment.

Security officials described the situation as a potentially dangerous breach that could have resulted in serious casualties if the devices had been activated or mishandled.

The recovered explosives have since been handed over to specialised units for safe handling, documentation, and forensic examination to determine their origin and intended purpose.

Authorities have also launched an internal investigation to identify possible security lapses and individuals who may have facilitated the introduction of the explosive materials into the custodial centre.

Correctional service officials stated that safeguarding detention facilities remains a top priority, especially given the risks associated with overcrowding and the presence of high-risk inmates.

The incident has prompted renewed calls for stricter screening procedures, improved surveillance systems, and enhanced intelligence coordination within custodial centres across the country.

Security experts note that custodial facilities are often vulnerable to infiltration attempts, making regular audits and rapid response protocols essential for maintaining order and safety.

Community stakeholders in Akwa Ibom have expressed concern over the incident, urging authorities to ensure transparency in the investigation and strengthen preventive measures to avoid future breaches.

As investigations continue, officials are expected to review security procedures at the Ikot Ekpene facility and implement additional safeguards to prevent recurrence.

The recovery of the explosives is being viewed as a critical intervention that potentially averted a serious security incident within the correctional system.
