Tensions between Iran and the United States are rising again, this time over control of the Strait of Hormuz a critical route for global oil shipments.
Iran’s military has warned it will target U.S. forces if they attempt to enter the waterway without coordination, reacting to plans announced by Donald Trump to escort commercial ships through the strait.
Trump said the operation, which he calls “Project Freedom,” is meant to help vessels stranded by the ongoing blockade, many of which are reportedly running low on supplies.
He insisted the mission is humanitarian and aimed at ensuring safe passage for crews caught in the standoff.
Tehran, however, has taken a hard line. Military officials say any foreign presence in the strait must be cleared with Iranian forces, warning that failure to do so would be treated as a direct threat.
The situation comes weeks after a ceasefire paused fighting in the recent U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.
Since then, diplomatic efforts have stalled, with both sides locked in disagreement over the future of the strait.
Iran’s closure of the route has already disrupted global supply chains, choking off key exports like oil and gas.
In response, Washington has stepped up pressure, combining military positioning with economic restrictions on Iran.
The U.S. says it is prepared to back its plan with significant force, including warships, aircraft, drones and thousands of personnel.
Meanwhile, shipping traffic in the region remains heavily affected, with hundreds of vessels still unable to move freely.
There are still signs of diplomacy behind the scenes. Iran is believed to have proposed a one-month window for negotiations to resolve the crisis, while European leaders are pushing both sides to reach an agreement and reopen the waterway.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a joint approach between Washington and Tehran, warning that prolonged disruption could further strain global economies.
For now, both sides appear unwilling to back down. The U.S. says it will proceed with its escort mission if necessary, while Iran is making it clear that any such move could trigger a direct confrontation.
