Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was rushed to hospital on Friday after reportedly collapsing during a Democracy Day protest in Abuja.

The incident occurred at the Unity Fountain, where protesters had gathered to voice concerns over worsening insecurity, rising economic hardship and what they described as poor governance.

Witnesses said tension escalated when police officers moved to disperse the crowd, firing tear gas canisters into the protest ground. As panic spread and demonstrators scrambled for safety, Sowore was said to have been overcome by the effects of the tear gas and lost consciousness.

Supporters and fellow activists quickly came to his aid, carrying him away from the scene and placing him in a vehicle for emergency medical attention. Sources close to the activist said he regained consciousness while being transported from the protest venue.

He was later taken to a hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment.

The development sparked fresh tension at the gathering, which drew dozens of activists and civil society groups marking Democracy Day with calls for improved security, better economic conditions and greater government accountability.

The protest was one of several activities held across the country on Democracy Day, a date that commemorates Nigeria’s return to democratic rule and honours the struggle for democratic governance.
