Elon Musk has become the first person in modern history to amass a fortune worth more than $1 trillion, following the blockbuster public listing of SpaceX.
The milestone came after SpaceX priced its initial public offering at $135 per share, dramatically increasing the value of Musk’s stake in the aerospace company and pushing his estimated net worth above the trillion-dollar mark.
Before the IPO, Musk was already the world’s richest individual, with an estimated fortune of $813 billion. According to Forbes, his wealth was more than twice that of Google co-founder Larry Page, who is currently worth about $288 billion.
The SpaceX listing changed the game.
With shares priced at $135, Musk’s net worth surged to an estimated $1.005 trillion, making him the first person ever to cross the trillion-dollar threshold.
The stock, trading under the ticker symbol “SPCX”, is expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq, where investors will closely watch whether the company’s market debut pushes Musk’s wealth even higher.
The achievement marks a new chapter in the history of personal wealth. To put the figure into perspective, a trillion dollars is larger than the annual economic output of most countries in the world. According to World Bank data, only a handful of nations have economies worth more than $1 trillion.
However, the development has also reignited debate about the growing gap between the ultra-wealthy and the rest of society.
Nabil Ahmed, Oxfam America’s Senior Director for Economic Justice, described Musk’s rise as another sign of widening inequality.
“Elon Musk’s rise to trillionaire status marks a new pinnacle of oligarchy,” Ahmed said.
The spaceX IPO is not only enriching Musk. Reports indicate that about 4,400 SpaceX employees could become millionaires as a result of the company’s stock market debut.
Still, Musk remains the biggest winner.
According to SpaceX’s IPO filing, he owns roughly 4.8 billion shares, representing about 42 per cent of the company. He also holds around 350 million stock options that can be exercised at $8.39 per share.
At the IPO price, Musk’s shareholding is valued at approximately $648 billion, while his stock options add another $44.3 billion to his fortune.
Forbes had previously estimated the value of his SpaceX stake at around $500 billion before the company went public. The IPO therefore added nearly $192.3 billion to the value of his holdings almost overnight.
The scale of Musk’s fortune has stunned economists and market observers alike. According to Oxfam, his wealth now exceeds the combined assets of roughly 3.8 billion people nearly 46 per cent of the world’s population.
Whether Musk remains a trillionaire will largely depend on how SpaceX performs on the stock market in the coming weeks. A rally in the company’s share price could push his wealth even higher, while a sharp decline could drag it back below the trillion-dollar mark.
For now, however, Musk has achieved a financial milestone no individual has ever reached before.
