LAGOS, Nigeria — Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) has finalised a landmark $1.8 billion deal to finance the critical Kano-Maradi railway project, a transformative infrastructure initiative expected to significantly boost trade and regional integration between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

The financial close, announced on Thursday, represents one of the largest infrastructure financing transactions in West Africa in recent years. The project, which involves the construction of a standard-gauge railway line connecting Kano in northern Nigeria to Maradi in Niger Republic, is designed to facilitate the movement of goods and passengers across the two nations.

The Kano-Maradi railway is a key component of Nigeria’s broader railway modernisation programme and aligns with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) vision for regional integration. The line is expected to enhance the export of agricultural produce, livestock, and other commodities from the landlocked Niger Republic through Nigerian ports, while also facilitating the import of goods into the region.

Sources familiar with the transaction indicated that the financing package was structured to attract both local and international investors. The deal is anticipated to create thousands of jobs during construction and stimulate economic activity along the corridor, benefiting communities in both countries.

The project has been described as a strategic response to the logistical challenges that have historically constrained trade between Nigeria and its northern neighbours. By providing a reliable and efficient railway connection, the initiative is expected to reduce transportation costs, improve supply chain resilience, and strengthen economic ties across the Sahel region.

RMB, a leading investment bank with a strong presence in Africa, has been instrumental in mobilising the required capital for the project. The bank’s involvement underscores its commitment to financing critical infrastructure that drives economic growth and regional development.

The railway project has also been hailed as a testament to the improving investment climate in Nigeria, despite ongoing security and economic challenges. The successful financial close is expected to bolster investor confidence and pave the way for similar infrastructure projects across the continent.

Both the Nigerian and Nigerien governments have expressed support for the project, which is seen as a catalyst for broader regional development. The railway line is expected to become a vital artery for trade and commerce, fostering closer ties between the two nations and their neighbours.

As construction is set to commence, stakeholders are optimistic that the Kano-Maradi railway will deliver transformative benefits, including enhanced regional integration, job creation, and improved livelihoods for millions of people across the corridor. For now, the project stands as a landmark achievement in West Africa’s infrastructure development journey.
