AGO-IWOYE, Ogun State — Students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) staged a protest on Thursday following the killing of a final-year student during an armed robbery attack in the early hours of the morning at a student hostel in Ago-Iwoye, the university’s host community .
The robbery occurred around midnight when armed assailants attacked Bukky’s Court, a student hostel located in the Mariam area of Ago-Iwoye, reportedly breaking doors and gaining access through the roof . The deceased student, identified simply as Timi, reportedly stepped out to check the disturbance before he was fatally shot . The robbers carted away mobile phones, power banks, laptops, money, and other valuables from multiple houses in the area .
Outraged by the incident, hundreds of students gathered at the university’s senate building, demanding justice for their slain colleague. The protesters later marched from the university campus to the Abodi police station, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards with various inscriptions .
In response to the incident, the university management declared Thursday a lecture-free day to allow students to mourn . Deputy Registrar Niyi Oduwole confirmed the student’s death in a statement and announced the suspension of lectures . “Following the incident of armed robbery in Ago-Iwoye township that resulted in the tragic loss of one of our students early this morning, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, on behalf of the University Senate has directed that today, Thursday, 18th June, 2026 be declared a lecture-free day,” the statement read .
The university management expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and assured students that adequate security measures would be put in place in collaboration with relevant security agencies to ensure safety of lives and property . Management also appealed to students to exercise restraint and eschew any action that would further aggravate the situation .
The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the incident and launched a manhunt for the suspected robbers . Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that police operatives responded promptly and have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators . The command sympathised with the family of the deceased and the university community .
This incident follows similar attacks at the university’s Ibogun campus just months ago, where armed robbers invaded student hostels and injured several students, prompting the state Commissioner of Police to order the establishment of a police post in the area . Students have expressed growing frustration over the recurring insecurity in the university community .
