KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Police Command has announced a restriction of vehicular movement in Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas for Saturday’s House of Representatives by-election, as part of measures to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday, explaining that the restriction will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on election day. He urged residents to cooperate with security operatives deployed to maintain law and order during the exercise.
According to the police command, only those on essential duties, including electoral officials, medical personnel, accredited journalists, and security operatives, will be permitted to move freely during the restricted hours. The command advised voters to proceed to their respective polling units early and return home immediately after casting their votes.
The by-election is being conducted to fill the vacant House of Representatives seat for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa federal constituency, following the death of the incumbent lawmaker. The Independent National Electoral Commission has assured voters of a smooth electoral process, with all necessary logistics and materials deployed to the affected local government areas.
Ahead of the election, the Kano State Police Command deployed adequate personnel to strategic locations across the two LGAs to prevent any breakdown of law and order. The command also warned political thugs and troublemakers to steer clear of the election, vowing to deal decisively with anyone caught attempting to disrupt the process.
Adeyinka Adeleke, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Kano State, confirmed that all necessary arrangements had been made for the election, including the deployment of non-sensitive materials to the two local government areas. He expressed confidence in the commission’s readiness and called on all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and successful exercise.
The police command reiterated its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and credible election, calling on residents to remain law-abiding and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
