France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a disciplined Paraguay side in an absorbing Round of 16 encounter.

The former world champions were made to work for every opportunity as Paraguay produced one of their most determined performances of the tournament, frustrating Didier Deschamps’ men for long spells with organized defending and quick counterattacks. However, a second-half strike proved enough to separate the two sides and send Les Bleus into the last eight.

France entered the knockout clash as favourites after an impressive group-stage campaign, but Paraguay showed from the opening whistle that they had no intention of making life easy for the European giants.

The South Americans defended with discipline, closing down space in midfield and forcing France to rely on long-range efforts and attacks down the flanks. Kylian Mbappé repeatedly threatened with his pace, while Ousmane Dembélé stretched the Paraguayan defence with dangerous runs, yet clear scoring opportunities remained limited during the first half.

Paraguay also created moments of concern for the French defence. Their quick transitions caught France on several occasions, and a powerful effort from outside the penalty area forced goalkeeper Mike Maignan into an excellent save to keep the score level.

France came close to breaking the deadlock before halftime when a curling effort struck the crossbar after beating the goalkeeper, with Paraguay surviving the scare before clearing the danger.

The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the restart.

In the 57th minute, France produced a flowing attacking move that unlocked Paraguay’s stubborn defence. A precise pass into the penalty area found striker Kylian Mbappé, who calmly slotted the ball beyond the goalkeeper to give Les Bleus a crucial 1-0 lead.

The goal forced Paraguay to become more adventurous in attack. The South Americans pushed more players forward in search of an equaliser, creating spaces that France attempted to exploit on the counterattack.

Paraguay nearly found a way back into the contest midway through the second half when a dangerous header narrowly missed the target following a corner kick. Minutes later, another attacking move ended with a shot that was brilliantly blocked inside the penalty area by the French defence.

France almost doubled their advantage with less than 15 minutes remaining. A swift counterattack saw Mbappé race clear before his low shot was brilliantly saved by the Paraguayan goalkeeper, who kept his side in contention until the closing stages.

As the clock ticked down, Paraguay continued to press with determination. Several crosses were delivered into the French penalty area, but defenders William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano remained composed under pressure, clearing repeated attacks to preserve the narrow advantage.

Deep into stoppage time, France survived one final scare when Paraguay launched a long ball into the box, but goalkeeper Maignan confidently collected it before the referee signalled the end of the match.

The victory sends France into the quarter-finals, where they will continue their pursuit of a third FIFA World Cup title. While Les Bleus once again demonstrated their ability to win difficult knockout matches, the encounter also highlighted the resilience and fighting spirit of Paraguay, whose disciplined display earned widespread praise despite the defeat.

France’s experience, patience and clinical finishing ultimately proved decisive. Although they were unable to dominate possession as comfortably as expected, they capitalised on one of their clearest opportunities and defended resolutely when Paraguay mounted late pressure.

With another quarter-final appearance secured, France remain among the strongest contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy. If they continue combining defensive solidity with the attacking quality of players such as Mbappé and Dembélé, Les Bleus will believe they have every chance of lifting football’s biggest prize once again.
