LONDON, United Kingdom — A resurgent Naomi Osaka stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a brilliant performance to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time in her career, marking a significant milestone in the Japanese star’s remarkable comeback.

Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan, and Aryna Sabalenka, the current world number one from Belarus, faced off on Centre Court. Sabalenka, who has won two Australian Open titles and one US Open, was the overwhelming favourite going into the match.

Osaka delivered a masterclass in grass-court tennis, out-serving, out-hitting, and out-thinking her opponent to win 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) on Centre Court. The victory marks Osaka’s first-ever quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon.

The match took place on July 4, 2026, at the All England Club in London, on the iconic Centre Court, the most famous tennis court in the world.

This is Sabalenka’s earliest exit at a Grand Slam since the 2022 French Open, and the first time she has exited one in straight sets in 122 matches. Osaka’s win comes after reaching the second week of the French Open for the first time last month, underlining her resurgence on all surfaces. “It’s been a long time since I had so much fun on the court,” Osaka said. “To do it here means a lot.”

This was the fourth meeting between the two in three months, with Sabalenka winning the previous three encounters. This time Osaka was dominant throughout, matching Sabalenka’s power and moving exceptionally well on the grass surface. The straight-sets victory is a testament to Osaka’s growing comfort on grass, traditionally her weakest surface.

For Osaka, this victory cements her return to the top tier of women’s tennis after a period of absence. For Sabalenka, it is a significant blow to her quest for a first Grand Slam title of the year. The defeat will also open up the women’s draw, making Osaka a genuine contender for the title.

Osaka combined a powerful serve with aggressive baseline play and excellent court coverage, nullifying Sabalenka’s devastating forehand. She held her racquet to her head in disbelief after clinching victory on her second match point, visibly emotional about her achievement. She previously credited her improved grass-court game to working with coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who introduced new training methods and helped her better understand the surface’s nuances.
