BAUCHI, NIGERIA — Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has warned newly sworn-in local government chairmen against misappropriating public funds, urging them to uphold transparency, accountability and responsible leadership in the management of resources entrusted to them.

The governor issued the warning while addressing the newly elected council chairmen following their swearing-in ceremony, stressing that public office carries a responsibility to serve the interests of citizens rather than provide opportunities for personal enrichment.

Mohammed charged the chairmen to prioritise the welfare and development of residents in their respective local government areas. He urged them to ensure that government resources are directed toward projects and programmes that have a direct and meaningful impact on communities.

The governor’s warning comes as local governments continue to play an important role in delivering basic services and infrastructure at the grassroots level. Roads, healthcare, education, sanitation, water supply and other community-focused initiatives often depend on effective management of local government resources.

Mohammed emphasised that the newly inaugurated chairmen would be expected to demonstrate integrity in carrying out their responsibilities. He cautioned them against practices that could undermine public confidence in local government administration or deprive communities of resources intended for development.

The governor also called on the council leaders to work closely with traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders in identifying the most pressing needs of residents. Such collaboration, he said, would help ensure that development initiatives reflect the priorities of the people.

The new chairmen were urged to approach their responsibilities with a strong sense of accountability and service. Rather than concentrating solely on political considerations, they were expected to focus on delivering tangible improvements that residents could see and benefit from.

The emphasis on financial accountability also reflects wider concerns about the management of public resources at the local government level in Nigeria. Local councils receive significant public funds to provide services and implement development projects, making transparency in their administration crucial to improving living conditions in communities.

For residents, the governor’s directive could increase expectations that the newly inaugurated council administrations will translate public resources into visible development. Communities are likely to closely monitor spending and demand greater transparency over projects and programmes implemented by their respective councils.

The chairmen will also face the challenge of balancing competing demands from different communities while working within available financial resources. Effective planning, prudent spending and proper prioritisation will therefore be important if the administrations are to meet the expectations of residents.

Mohammed’s warning signals that his administration intends to place greater emphasis on responsible governance at the grassroots level. By calling on the new council leaders to avoid misappropriation, the governor is seeking to reinforce the principle that public funds must be used for public purposes.

The newly sworn-in chairmen now begin their tenure under clear expectations of accountability and performance. Their ability to maintain financial discipline while delivering meaningful projects will likely shape public perception of their administrations.

As the new local government leadership settles into office, attention will turn to how effectively the chairmen translate the governor’s directive into practice. For communities across Bauchi State, the central expectation remains straightforward: public resources should produce public benefits, and those entrusted with managing them should remain accountable to the people they serve.
