Katsina Police Threaten Arrests As 2027 Political Violence Looms

KATSINA, NIGERIA — The Katsina State Police Command has warned that it will arrest sponsors and perpetrators of political violence ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as authorities move to prevent a rise in thuggery and politically motivated attacks across the state.

The warning comes amid growing concerns about the early emergence of political tensions and violence in different parts of Nigeria as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 polls. Recent incidents involving suspected political thugs in Katsina and other states have heightened fears that violence could become more pronounced as the elections draw closer.

The Katsina Police Command said it would not allow individuals or groups to use violence as a tool for achieving political objectives. The command’s position places responsibility not only on those who directly participate in violent acts but also on individuals who finance, organise or otherwise support such activities.

Police authorities also urged young people in the state to reject political thuggery and refuse to become instruments in the hands of politicians seeking to advance their interests through violence.

The appeal to youths comes as security and political stakeholders continue to express concern about the recruitment of young people into political violence. Analysts have linked the vulnerability of unemployed and economically disadvantaged youths to the activities of political actors who allegedly recruit them for relatively small financial rewards.

Katsina has already witnessed incidents that have intensified concerns about the political atmosphere ahead of 2027. In September 2025, a security meeting organised by the Katsina Security Community Initiative was disrupted by suspected thugs. The meeting had brought together security experts, retired senior security officers, academics and other stakeholders to discuss insecurity in the state.

The disruption reportedly degenerated into chaos, with chairs thrown and journalists attacked. The incident prompted warnings that growing political tension could create a dangerous environment ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political violence has also emerged as a wider national concern. Reports have documented incidents and allegations involving political gatherings, opposition activities and suspected thuggery in states including Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Kebbi and Jigawa. Stakeholders have warned that such incidents could undermine the credibility and peaceful conduct of the next general elections.

Security experts have argued that political violence cannot be addressed solely by deploying police officers after incidents occur. They have called for stronger enforcement, political education and accountability for both perpetrators and those who finance violent activities.

A major concern is the possibility that individuals involved in electoral violence could escape punishment, thereby encouraging others to repeat similar offences. Security analysts have therefore stressed the importance of ensuring that arrests are followed by proper investigations and prosecution.

The police warning in Katsina signals an attempt to establish a deterrent before political competition becomes more intense. By targeting both sponsors and perpetrators, authorities are placing emphasis on the networks that support political violence rather than focusing exclusively on those found carrying out attacks.

The command’s warning also comes at a time when stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the security challenges that could affect the 2027 elections. In May 2026, civil society organisations and other stakeholders raised concerns about insecurity and electoral credibility, while the police also pledged action against vote-buying, electoral violence and other threats to the polls.

For young people in Katsina, the police message is particularly significant. Authorities are urging them to avoid being drawn into political conflicts and to reject offers that could turn them into foot soldiers for competing political interests.

The command’s position reflects a broader concern that political violence can escalate quickly once armed groups, thugs and other violent actors become embedded in election campaigns. Previous episodes of electoral violence in Nigeria have demonstrated how intimidation, clashes and attacks can disrupt political participation and weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.

As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, attention will increasingly turn to the ability of security agencies to enforce the law impartially and protect political gatherings, candidates and voters.

The Katsina Police Command has now made its position clear: individuals who sponsor or participate in political violence should expect arrest and possible legal consequences.

With political activities already generating tension in parts of the country, authorities and political stakeholders face growing pressure to ensure that competition for political power does not translate into violence on the streets.

The coming months will test whether the warning can serve as an effective deterrent and whether political actors, supporters and young people across Katsina will heed calls to reject violence ahead of the 2027 elections.
