Paris Saint Germain produced a remarkable late comeback on Friday night as two goals in stoppage time rescued a 2-2 draw against Lille in a dramatic Ligue 1 encounter at the Decathlon Arena Stade Pierre Mauroy.
The reigning European champions appeared destined for their second consecutive league draw after Lille established a commanding 2-0 advantage, but Vitinha and Marquinhos struck in the dying minutes to preserve PSG’s unbeaten start to the campaign.
The result, however, means Luis Enrique’s side are still searching for their first Ligue 1 victory of the season after beginning their title defence with consecutive 2-2 draws. PSG were also held by Rennes in their opening league fixture, leaving the champions with just two points from their first two matches.
The match itself began 15 minutes later than scheduled because of ticketing problems at the stadium, but once play eventually got underway, both teams wasted little time showing attacking intent.
Lille gradually began to expose spaces in the PSG defence and were rewarded in the 21st minute. Olivier Giroud provided the crucial pass for Hakon Arnar Haraldsson, who finished the move to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
PSG dominated possession for long periods and attempted to use their technical quality to break down Lille’s compact defensive structure. Vitinha was particularly influential in midfield, helping PSG circulate possession and search for openings, but Lille remained disciplined and dangerous whenever they transitioned forward.
The visitors created opportunities but struggled to turn their territorial advantage into goals. Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer also made important interventions as PSG increased the pressure, while the hosts continued to threaten on the counterattack.
As the second half progressed, Lille grew increasingly confident that they could claim a major victory against the European champions.
That belief appeared justified when Dilane Bakwa doubled Lille’s advantage in the 84th minute. The Lille forward produced a superb curling finish to make it 2-0, leaving PSG with only a few minutes of normal time to find a way back into the contest.
Lille looked set to secure one of the biggest results of the early Ligue 1 season, but PSG suddenly produced an extraordinary response.
With the clock moving into stoppage time, Vitinha stepped forward and gave the visitors renewed hope. The Portuguese midfielder scored in the 91st minute with a spectacular strike that reduced the deficit to 2-1. His goal transformed the atmosphere and immediately put Lille under enormous pressure.
PSG refused to accept defeat and threw players forward in search of an equaliser. The pressure eventually paid off again.
In the 95th minute, Vitinha turned provider as his delivery found captain Marquinhos, who rose brilliantly to head the ball into the net and complete PSG’s sensational comeback. The Brazilian defender’s header sparked wild celebrations among the travelling PSG supporters and rescued a point that had looked almost impossible only minutes earlier.
The late comeback was particularly significant because Lille had controlled the game effectively for long stretches and were seconds away from defeating the reigning champions. PSG, however, demonstrated the resilience that has become a defining feature of Luis Enrique’s team.
The statistics reflected PSG’s dominance in possession and attacking volume. The visitors finished with approximately 73 percent possession and registered 18 shots compared with Lille’s nine. PSG also recorded 22 touches in Lille’s penalty area, compared with 13 for the hosts.
Despite those numbers, Lille will feel disappointed not to have collected all three points after holding a two-goal lead until the final minutes. Davide Ancelotti’s side defended bravely for most of the contest and looked on course for a memorable victory before PSG’s dramatic intervention.
For Luis Enrique, the comeback demonstrated the character of his squad, but the manager will also be concerned by another slow start to the Ligue 1 campaign. PSG have now conceded four goals in their opening two league matches and have been forced to fight back from two goals down in consecutive games.
The European champions therefore leave Lille with a point rather than the victory they desperately wanted. PSG sit on two points after two matches, while Lille move onto four points following their opening victory and Friday’s draw.
For Lille, the performance provided plenty of encouragement despite the heartbreaking conclusion. For PSG, the comeback once again underlined their refusal to surrender, but it also highlighted areas that Luis Enrique must address if his side are to successfully defend their Ligue 1 crown.
Vitinha emerged as the hero with a goal and an assist, while Marquinhos delivered the decisive late header. What looked like a comfortable Lille victory turned into one of the most dramatic finishes of the young Ligue 1 season, as PSG scored twice in injury time to escape with a 2-2 draw.
