At least 27 people have been killed after a minibus carrying churchgoers collided head-on with a haulage truck in central Zimbabwe.
The crash occurred around 6:30pm on Friday near Chivhu, about 140 kilometres south of Harare, police said on Saturday.
According to the police, the foreign-registered truck was overtaking another vehicle when it collided with the minibus carrying worshippers to a church conference.
Both vehicles had an unknown number of passengers at the time of the crash, while seven people were injured.
Footage released by Zimbabwe’s public broadcaster, ZBC, showed the minibus badly damaged and burnt, while the truck came to a stop on the opposite side of the road.
Road crashes are common in Zimbabwe, with poor road conditions, including potholes, and unsafe driving practices often blamed for the high number of accidents.
The country’s privately operated minibuses, commonly known as kombis, are widely used for transportation but have also faced criticism over overloading.
In April, at least 18 people were killed after a minibus caught fire on a highway in southern Zimbabwe.
Earlier that month, a woman and her five children also died when their vehicle collided with a haulage truck on a highway linking Zimbabwe and South Africa.
