ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to end Nigeria’s security challenges with the implementation of a new five-year defence strategy and stronger collaboration with state governments, the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has disclosed .
Matawalle made the disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, where he outlined the government’s comprehensive approach to tackling the multifaceted security threats facing the nation. He said the new strategy, which was developed in consultation with security agencies, state governments, and international partners, represents a significant shift from reactive to proactive security management .
“The era of reactive response to security challenges is over. We are now moving to a proactive, intelligence-driven, and community-based approach that will ensure the safety of every Nigerian,” Matawalle stated .
The minister revealed that the strategy includes enhanced intelligence sharing, improved inter-agency coordination, and significant investment in modern military equipment and technology. He noted that the government had already begun acquiring advanced surveillance systems and combat vehicles to strengthen the operational capabilities of the armed forces .
Matawalle also emphasised the importance of state-level collaboration, noting that insecurity is often localised and requires tailored solutions. He called on state governors to actively participate in the implementation of the strategy, particularly in areas such as community policing, intelligence gathering, and the provision of logistics support to security forces operating in their states .
“The Federal Government cannot do it alone. We need the support and cooperation of state governments to ensure the success of this strategy. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to restore peace and security across the country,” he said .
The minister also highlighted the role of traditional and religious leaders in fostering peace and stability, urging them to use their influence to promote dialogue and discourage violence in their communities. He noted that the government would continue to engage with these leaders as part of its broader strategy to address the root causes of insecurity.
Matawalle also addressed the issue of security funding, assuring Nigerians that the government was committed to providing the necessary resources to ensure the successful implementation of the strategy. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely and actionable intelligence.
The new defence strategy is expected to be implemented over the next five years, with regular reviews to assess progress and make necessary adjustments. The Federal Government has expressed confidence that the strategy will significantly reduce insecurity and create an enabling environment for economic development and social progress.
