Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has heaped praise on Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi following Hull City’s remarkable start to life back in the Premier League.
Hull returned to England’s top flight after a nine-year absence, but rather than looking overwhelmed by the occasion, the newly promoted side have immediately shown that they are ready to compete. At the heart of that impressive beginning has been Ajayi, whose leadership, defensive discipline and unexpected contribution in front of goal have helped the Tigers make an early statement.
Ikpeba believes the Nigerian defender deserves significant credit for Hull’s strong opening to the campaign, particularly after playing a starring role in their memorable 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
The victory over United was the perfect way for Hull to announce their return to the Premier League.
Playing in front of an excited home crowd at the MKM Stadium, Hull showed no fear against a Manchester United side that arrived with plenty of optimism. Michael Carrick’s team had enjoyed a positive revival under the former United midfielder, but Hull quickly exposed their weaknesses and secured a famous victory.
Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest after goalkeeper Senne Lammens saved an initial effort. The Nigerian centre-back followed up at close range to put Hull ahead and send the home supporters into celebration.
There was some initial confusion over the goal, with Hull striker Oli McBurnie appearing to celebrate as though he had scored. Ajayi later admitted that he was not particularly concerned about who received the credit, as long as the ball ended up in the net.
The goal was eventually awarded to the Nigerian, giving him a dream start to his first Premier League campaign with Hull.
Nobel Mendy then doubled the advantage in the 38th minute, again from a set-piece situation, as Hull punished United’s inability to defend dead-ball situations. The two centre-backs had effectively decided the match before half-time.
United dominated possession but struggled to turn it into meaningful opportunities. Hull, meanwhile, remained compact, aggressive and disciplined, protecting their lead with impressive organisation.
Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis also played his part, making five saves as Hull secured a clean sheet and one of the most memorable victories in the club’s recent history.
The result was historic for several reasons.
It was Hull’s first Premier League victory over Manchester United and their first league victory against the Red Devils since 1974. More remarkably, United became the first newly promoted side to defeat Manchester United on the opening day of a Premier League season.
For Ajayi, the occasion was particularly special.
The 32-year-old defender arrived at Hull after spending six seasons at West Bromwich Albion and has brought considerable experience to a team adjusting to the demands of Premier League football. His presence has given Hull another experienced voice at the back and, judging by the early results, that experience is already proving valuable.
Hull’s defensive strength has been one of the biggest stories of their opening weeks.
After beating Manchester United 2-0, the Tigers followed it up with another victory and then held Aston Villa to a goalless draw at the MKM Stadium. That result extended their unbeaten run and, after the Villa game, Hull had gone three Premier League matches without conceding a goal.
The draw with Aston Villa was another example of Ajayi’s importance.
Villa enjoyed periods of possession and created opportunities, but Hull’s defensive structure remained difficult to break down. Ajayi completed 23 of his 25 passes and made several important defensive contributions during the 90 minutes.
The defender was also booked while stopping Nicolas Jackson’s progress during the first half, showing the physical and combative side of his game.
For Ikpeba, Hull’s early success should not be dismissed as a temporary surprise. The former Monaco and Super Eagles striker believes players such as Ajayi deserve recognition for helping the promoted club make such a confident transition to the Premier League.
Hull’s start has certainly changed the conversation around their chances of survival.
Before the season began, many outsiders expected the Tigers to struggle against the financial power and quality of established Premier League clubs. But manager Sergej Jakirovic has built a side that appears comfortable defending as a unit, competing physically and making the most of set pieces.
Ajayi fits perfectly into that approach.
At 6ft 4in, the defender provides a strong presence inside the penalty area, while his experience in English football has given him a clear understanding of the physical and tactical demands of the game.
His goal against Manchester United also demonstrated another useful quality: his threat from set pieces.
Hull have already shown how dangerous they can be from dead-ball situations, with both Ajayi and Mendy scoring against United. For a newly promoted side, that can be an important weapon throughout the season.
But perhaps the biggest compliment to Ajayi is that his contribution has not been limited to scoring.
His leadership, positioning and defensive awareness have helped Hull keep opponents at bay, while his partnership with fellow defenders has given the team a solid foundation from which to build.
There is still a long road ahead.
Three matches do not guarantee Premier League survival, and Hull will face considerably tougher challenges as the season progresses. They must maintain their defensive discipline when injuries, suspensions and fatigue begin to take their toll.
For now, however, the Tigers have every reason to be optimistic.
Their return to the Premier League has been anything but timid. A famous win over Manchester United, another strong result and a goalless draw against Aston Villa have given Hull four points from their opening matches and, more importantly, belief that they belong at this level.
And at the centre of that early success stands Semi Ajayi.
The Nigerian defender has already scored a historic Premier League goal, helped Hull secure clean sheets and provided the experience required to guide a newly promoted side through its opening challenges.
If Hull continue defending with the same organisation and determination, Ajayi could prove to be one of the key figures in their bid to remain in the Premier League.
Ikpeba’s praise, therefore, comes at an appropriate time.
Hull may have returned to the Premier League as underdogs, but Semi Ajayi and his teammates are quickly proving that they are not simply there to make up the numbers.
