ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Obi-Kwankwaso Movement has unveiled a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council, with zonal and state coordinators, ahead of the 2027 general elections, marking a significant step in the Nigeria Democratic Congress’s preparations for the presidential contest.
The campaign council, which was inaugurated on Thursday at a ceremony in Abuja, comprises seasoned politicians, technocrats, professionals, and grassroots mobilisers drawn from across the country’s six geopolitical zones. The council is chaired by a former governor, with the Director-General of the movement serving as the secretary.
Speaking at the inauguration, the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, charged members of the campaign council to remain focused on the party’s message of good governance, economic transformation, and social justice. He said the 2027 election was about the future of Nigeria and that the campaign must be conducted with dignity, discipline, and respect for the electorate.
“This campaign is not about me or any individual. It is about the future of our country. We must remain focused on the issues that matter to Nigerians: the economy, security, education, healthcare, and the welfare of our people,” Obi stated.
The NDC vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, also addressed the gathering, urging members of the campaign council to work tirelessly to ensure the party’s victory in 2027. He said the NDC was the only party capable of addressing the challenges facing Nigeria and that the campaign must reach every ward and polling unit across the country.
“We have the structure, we have the message, and we have the candidate. What we need now is hard work and commitment. Let us go out there and deliver victory for our party and for the Nigerian people,” Kwankwaso said.
The Director-General of the campaign council, who spoke on behalf of the members, thanked Obi and Kwankwaso for the opportunity to serve and pledged their commitment to the party’s success. He said the council would focus on grassroots mobilisation, voter education, and the protection of the party’s votes on election day.
“We understand the responsibility placed on our shoulders. We will not let you down. We will work day and night to ensure that the NDC emerges victorious in 2027,” he said.
The campaign council has been structured to include zonal coordinators for the six geopolitical zones, state coordinators for all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and directors for various campaign functions, including media, publicity, finance, mobilisation, and strategy. The council also includes a legal team and a situation room that will monitor the electoral process and respond to developments as they arise.
Political analysts have described the unveiling of the campaign council as a significant step in the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 elections. They noted that the party has been building momentum since Obi and Kwankwaso emerged as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates, attracting defectors from other parties and gaining support among young voters and civil society groups.
“The NDC is positioning itself as a credible alternative to the ruling APC. The composition of the campaign council, which includes experienced politicians and professionals, reflects the party’s seriousness and its determination to mount a formidable challenge in 2027,” said Dr. Ayo Adebayo, a political scientist at the University of Lagos.
As the campaign council begins its work, the NDC is expected to intensify its engagement with voters across the country, presenting its policies and programmes to the electorate.
