A National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer has reportedly drowned while pursuing a suspected drug offender into the Ethiope River in Obiaruku, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday during an NDLEA operation targeting suspected drug offenders in the community.
According to reports by Vanguard and The Guardian, one of the suspects allegedly broke free while being taken towards the Ethiope River Bridge and jumped into the river in an attempt to escape arrest. NDLEA officers reportedly entered the water in pursuit of the fleeing suspect.
The pursuit reportedly ended in tragedy when one of the officers drowned. Another officer who entered the river was rescued and taken to a hospital for medical attention.
The suspected offenders were also said to have escaped through the river during the incident.
The body of the deceased officer was later recovered from the river. His identity had not been publicly released at the time of reporting.
Community sources also told news organisations that traditional rites associated with drowning incidents in the area were performed before the remains were handed over to the relevant authorities. The sources claimed that a goat and other items were provided as part of the rites.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have not been fully established. The Guardian reported that a senior NDLEA official confirmed that the incident occurred and said an investigation was ongoing, while the agency had not publicly released the identity of the deceased officer or details of the suspected offender involved.
The incident has sparked concern over the dangers faced by law-enforcement personnel during operations, particularly when suspects attempt to escape through waterways.
